Introduction


The monitor market can be a tough nut to crack, especially if you are a first-timer. Just looking at the spec sheet can get confusing really quickly if you are not familiar with the terms. But frankly, when it comes to monitors, one of the biggest decisions you have to make is the panel; everything else follows after.

So, here is a guide that breaks down what each panel type does well, where it falls short, and which one actually makes sense for your use case.

Small note before we begin: this will be quite a surface-level introductory guide to get you started on the different panel technologies. We won’t be doing a super deep-dive on each panel technology, as that would make the article too dense.

TN Panels


TN, or Twisted Nematic, panels are the oldest of the bunch. These panels reigned in the early 2000s and 2010s. It’s the oldest LCD tech still shipping in gaming monitors in 2026, and the reason for that is speed and cost. TN panels are known for their exceptional response times. Modern TN panels can achieve response times as low as 0.5ms and reach high refresh rates too.

Because of that, TN panels became the go-to for competitive gaming. They are fast, support high refresh rates, and are quite inexpensive. ZOWIE’s popular XL series is one of the most popular competitive gaming monitor lines, as most of them are built around Fast-TN panels. However, there are major drawbacks as well.

TN panels are extremely fast, but they are not that good when it comes to image quality. Firstly, they are the worst in color accuracy and contrast, making colors look extremely flat. They also have narrow viewing angles, meaning if you look at the monitor from an angle, it looks worse. To put it simply, TN panels are only great if you solely use them for competitive gaming. For any type of browsing, or consuming content, or doing design work, TN panels should be your last choice.

Despite their drawbacks, TN panels are still dominating the competitive esports market. In fact, the top five most used monitors according to our data all have TN panels.

To put it simply, if you are buying a monitor specifically for competitive gaming, then you can go for TN panels.

VA Panels


VA stands for Vertical Alignment, and similar to TN, it’s an LCD panel using a backlight. It’s the polar opposite of TN panels. VA panels are known for their image quality; they can produce the richest blacks and have much higher contrast ratios than TN and even IPS.

This is why VA panels are quite popular in budget TVs. They make movies, games, and pretty much any content look really good. However, they are not the best when it comes to response times, which is why they aren’t as common in gaming monitors as other panels. They also have ghosting issues. The black trail you see behind a moving image is called ghosting, and it’s the worst in VA panels.

It’s best for those who mostly care about immersive single-player games like RPGs or watching content. But it’s a poor fit for CS2, VALORANT, or any other competitive shooter where response time matters.

IPS Panels (Fast-IPS and Nano-IPS)


IPS stands for In-Plane Switching, and it’s one of the most popular panel types. The reason is simple: it’s a good middle ground for pretty much everything you need from a monitor. In fact, IPS was designed to solve the viewing angles and color accuracy problems of the TN panel.

Historically, IPS was slower than TN panels in response times. But modern IPS variants like Fast-IPS and Nano-IPS have managed to bridge the gap significantly. While TN panels are technically faster, IPS has managed to get close enough for it not to feel noticeable. In exchange, you get accurate and vivid colors, better contrast, and wider viewing angles.

IPS isn’t perfect, though; it’s still weak on the contrast side. IPS panels have a known problem called IPS glow, where you can see a faint white glow in the corners of the screen. It’s mostly noticeable with high brightness in a dark room. Newer “IPS Black” variants have noticeably reduced this, but it hasn’t disappeared entirely.

Fast-IPS and Nano-IPS are the best all-rounder panels you can get. If you are looking for a monitor that handles competitive gaming well, while still producing good image quality, then IPS is the one to pick. It’s basically a panel that does everything well.

OLED and QD-OLED


OLED, or Organic Light-Emitting Diode, is quite different than all the panels we mentioned. There’s no backlight shining through a layer of crystals. Instead, every single pixel is its own tiny light source that can turn fully on or fully off independently. QD-OLED is just a variant of OLED that gives you even better colors.

Because each pixel can be turned off or on independently, OLED produces true, dark blacks and has the best contrast out of any panels on this list. Colors are also vivid and accurate. To put it simply, OLED beats all the panels on this list in terms of image quality and color accuracy.

When it comes to gaming, OLED can be faster than TN panels. Because each pixel can be controlled individually instead of waiting for the crystals to get into position, OLED panels have extremely fast response times close to 0.1ms. On paper, OLED blows every other panel out of the water.

But then why isn’t it as common? There are a couple of reasons for that.

First, OLED monitors are quite expensive compared to other panels. For instance, a 2K 240Hz OLED monitor will cost much more than a TN or IPS variant with the same specs. This makes it more of a premium choice than something the average gamer can afford.

Second is motion blur and burn-in. OLED monitors are super fast, but they also suffer from motion blur. Fast-moving objects can appear blurry, and while that can be ignored most of the time, in competitive games that blur can cause you to miss things. In highly competitive environments like pro gaming matches, this can be a big deal.

Burn-in is also a common problem in OLED monitors. Pixels that stay at the same brightness in the same spot on screen (like your taskbar or a game HUD) can wear down over time and leave a faint ghost image behind, even after you’ve moved on to something else. Modern OLED monitors have been known to be better at preventing burn-in, and manufacturers are also offering burn-in warranties, which has mitigated this issue quite a bit.

OLED is for players who want the best possible image quality and are willing to pay more for it. Basically, if you are looking for a monitor that does everything great and don’t mind spending a bit, then you should go for OLED.

Final Verdict


If you are all about competitive gaming, grind scrims, and want every edge you can get, then go for TN panels. TN panels are the standard for competitive esports. A lot of pros across different games are still on TN panels because of their speed. But for a home setup where you do more than just competitive gaming, TN panels might not be the best choice, as they have poor image quality compared to other panel types.

If you are looking for a monitor that produces good image quality, is fast enough to keep up with competitive gaming, and isn’t super expensive, then go for IPS. They provide much better quality than TN panels and are very close in response times.

If you can splurge a bit more and want even better image quality, then go for OLED. It offers the best image quality and response times but can be costly, especially if you go for a 360Hz monitor.

Lastly, avoid VA, as it’s the worst option for competitive gaming.

The above should be enough to get a bearing in the monitor market, but you should note that there are always exceptions. Not all TN monitors are better and faster than IPS monitors, for example. Always read reviews and look for user experiences before committing to a big purchase.
